Haggai for Today
Haggai 1:1-15, paraphrased
The prophet spoke the word of the LORD to the Mayor and to the High Priest. “This is what the LORD says: ’The people say it's not the time to focus on rebuilding our personal spiritual lives, or about spiritual priorities.’"
Then the prophet spoke the word of the LORD: “Is it right for you to be living in nice comfortable homes while your spiritual life is still homeless?“
This is what the LORD says: “Think about what you have been doing. About your priorities! You planted crops, but you harvest little. You eat, but you are not full. You drink and you are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you are not warm enough. You earn money, but then you lose it all by over-spending and bad investing. Like addicts, you are addicted to short-term thinking and want instant results. Think about what you have been doing."
"Now its time for you to go to deeper parts of your life, find the good there, and build up your spiritual life. Make it your top priority, then I will be pleased and honored,“ says the LORD.
“You look for much, but you find little. When you bring it home, I destroy it. Why is that?" asks the LORD All-Powerful. “Because all you are working for is where you live, while ignoring your heart, which is where I live! Because of what you have been doing, the sky holds back its rain and the ground holds back its crops. I have called for a time of drought, of sickness and disease and the ruining your work. You have shown nothing but short-term thinking, and you deserve the consequences."
The Mayor and the high priest, and all the rest of the people who were left alive obeyed the LORD their God and the message from the prophet, because they realized that the LORD their God had sent him. The people respected and revered the LORD more than before.
Then the LORD’S messenger, gave the LORD’S message to the people, saying, “The LORD reminds you, 'I am with you.'"
The LORD stirred up the Mayor and the high priest, and all the rest of the people who were left alive. So they came and focused on personally growing closer to their God, the LORD.
